Communicating with Local Policymakers
In large cities and counties, elected officials have staff with specialized roles similar to legislative staff at the state and federal levels. In these cases, staffers are often the first people you should contact to engage with policymakers. City or county websites should have information on staffing roles, titles, and contact information. In smaller municipalities-and many geographically large or urban ones-elected officials are part-time positions and have small or no staff.
Public agency staffs are at the frontline of policy development and implementation. Large cities and counties have fully staffed departments that you can contact to impact policy on particular issues. In smaller counties and towns, one administrator may be responsible for several different functions.
